In response to the alarming reports that the US now locks up one in 100 adults, and among African Americans, the number is one in 15 adults, the Unitive Movement is being launched in Virginia! When there is a breach of peace and order, we have two choices: punish the guilty or heal the breach. The punitive model that seeks retribution and punishment has produced this incarceration binge.
The unitive model - it heals the breach - places emphasis on restorative programs, problem solving courts, the Community Model for jails, prisons and reentry. It reduces recidivism far more effectively and costs far less. The unitive movement has begun to marshall grass roots resources to transfrom the correctional system in Virginia from the punitive model to the unitive model thru legislative reforms.
